Susan Strange

Warwick · international political economy
Warwick · international political economy

IPE scholar who treated structural power — security, production, finance, knowledge — as the real currency of politics, not the formal authority of states.

Notes on this author

The move worth stealing. Four structures, and the one that binds you is the one you have least control over. States bargained in security and production and then discovered finance was the structure that actually set their room to manoeuvre.

Why it bites here. A small chain can out-engineer its consensus and still be governed by the dollar funding structure it never chose. Strange's point is that structural power does not need to be exercised to be effective — it is effective by shaping what looks possible.
